In keeping with its desire to cherish God’s creation, take care of the environment and serve our neighbour, the church has two community allotment plots. These provide a wide range of organically grown fruit and vegetables throughout the year. One plot, which was completely overgrown when we took it over, has been cultivated for the last sixteen years, and the second for twelve years.
We have been fortunate to receive donations of tools and equipment, including a shed and a greenhouse, which have helped to keep costs to a minimum. One person’s junk can be an allotmenteer’s treasure! Numerous recycled and reclaimed items have been repurposed as plant supports, edges to raised beds, water butts, compost containers and cloches.
Gardening organically means that we use no pesticides or artificial fertilisers. We try to encourage biodiversity by sowing native flowers to encourage pollinating insects amongst the vegetables and have been thrilled to find frogs and newts living in our small wildlife pond.
Volunteers of all ages and abilities help on the allotment. In the summer months we welcome small groups of primary school children, who enjoy hands-on learning about how to grow healthy food. Watering is a particularly popular activity in hot weather!
All our produce is used in church kitchen, where it is used for lunches for elderly people and at other church events.
Offers of help on the allotment, on either a regular or one- off basis, is always welcome. Please contact the church office if you would like further information.
