o To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
o To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
o To respond to human need by loving service
o To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation
o To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth
The five marks of mission have been developed by the Anglican Consultative Council since 1984. In 2012, the ACC added wording to the fourth mark, to include the need for Christians to challenge violence and work for peace. www.anglicancommunion.org/ministry/mission/fivemarks.cfm
The 5 marks of mission incorporate:
o The Golden Commandment - Matthew 22:36-40
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
o The New commandment: John 13:34-35
34 ‘A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
o The Great commission - Matthew 28:16-2016
16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
We have abbreviated the five marks to five words:
TELL – TEACH – TEND – TRANSFORM – TREASURE.
We have also added Worship and the centre of all we do. At AAURC, the ‘6’ marks of mission have been adopted as our understanding of what contemporary mission is about and we use them as the basis of action plans and creative mission ideas.
